Used Kalmar DRG 450-65S5E Reachstacker – 45 t, 2020

A 2020 reachstacker with 45 tonnes in the first row

The Kalmar DRG 450-65S5E is built for one job: handling loaded containers in terminals and inland ports, all day, every day. This unit was built in 2020 and has around 20,500 working hours. On a machine of this class that is a moderate figure — a well maintained reachstacker is measured in tens of thousands of hours.

It lifts 45 tonnes in the first row, 32 in the second and 16 in the third, and stacks five 9’6” containers high in the first row. It comes with a telescopic spreader for loaded containers, so it arrives ready to work with no attachment to source.

Engine, transmission and axle

The engine is a Volvo TAD 1181 VE turbodiesel. The transmission is a ZF 5WG261 with torque converter, power-shift and inching, usable in manual and automatic mode. Inching is what lets the driver creep the load into position while keeping engine revs where the hydraulics need them — on fine stacking work it is the function that gets used most.

The front axle is a Kessler D 102. Service brakes are oil-cooled multi-disc units running in an oil bath, a maintenance-free arrangement that makes a real difference in running costs on terminal machines, where braking happens constantly and under full load. The parking brake is a dry disc on the drive shaft.

Hydraulics, steering and cab

The system runs on variable displacement piston pumps of the load-sensing type, delivering flow only when the controls call for it. Steering is servo-assisted and stays responsive even with the machine stationary, thanks to a reinforced double-acting single cylinder on the steering axle.

The cab is enclosed, sound-insulated, heated and air conditioned, mounted centrally at the rear for 360-degree visibility.

What it suits

  • container terminals and inland ports, on loaded boxes up to 45 tonnes
  • port yards stacking up to five high
  • bonded warehouses and logistics platforms with heavy throughput
  • third-party operators who need to reach across several stacking rows
