Used Kalmar DCF80-45ES6 Empty Container Handler – 2015

Make: Kalmar · Model: DCF80-45ES6 · Year: 2015 · Hours: approx. 10,000 · Capacity: 8,000 kg · Stacking: 6 high (9’6″ containers) · Status: arriving soon

An 8-tonne Kalmar empty container handler that stacks six high

The Kalmar DCF80-45ES6 does one job and does it all day: lifting empty ISO containers and stacking them higher than a conventional forklift can reach. It handles 8,000 kg and stacks six 9’6″ high-cube containers on top of each other, which in practice decides how many boxes fit into the same yard.

This unit was built in 2015 and has run roughly 10,000 hours. On an empty handler — a machine that works well below its structural limits — 10,000 hours is little more than halfway through its life: the expensive parts, meaning the chassis, the mast and the drive axle, are still original and have years of service ahead. The machine has been tested and is operational.

This machine is arriving soon. If it is of interest, tell us now: we can confirm the exact availability date, send photographs of this specific unit as soon as it reaches our yard, and keep you informed before it goes into the public catalogue.

Engine, transmission and brakes

The engine is a water-cooled turbocharged Volvo diesel, and that matters more than it may seem. Volvo industrial engines are among the most widely used in port handling, so filters, injectors and service parts are available everywhere and any competent workshop can work on them. On a machine that has to earn its keep in a terminal, parts availability is worth as much as performance.

Drive is through an automatic powershift transmission with forward and reverse under load — the way these machines are actually operated on a yard, where direction changes are constant. Braking is by oil-immersed multi-disc brakes on the drive axle: enclosed, so dust and water stay out, wear is slow and maintenance intervals are long. Steering is on the rear axle.

Spreader, mast and cab

The spreader is telescopic from 20 to 40 feet, with side-shift and pile slope. Those two movements are what let an operator pick a container that is not perfectly square to the machine without repositioning the whole truck — on a row of untidily placed boxes it is the difference between one approach and five.

The mast is a high-lift type dedicated to empty containers, handling 20 ft and 40 ft ISO boxes in both standard and high-cube heights (8’6″ and 9’6″).

The cab is the ergonomic Kalmar unit in the raised position, with a multifunction joystick and generous glazing: at the sixth tier the driver has to see the twistlocks, and from a low cab he cannot. Equipment includes full work lighting, road lights and a reversing alarm.

Typical applications

  • container depots and terminals stacking empties in tall rows
  • yards run by container leasing and repair companies
  • ports and inland terminals that need to free up ground space by stacking vertically
  • logistics operators with a steady flow of empty boxes in and out
