A 45-tonne reachstacker for laden containers

The Fantuzzi CS45KE is a reachstacker for 20 ft and 40 ft ISO containers, built in 2007. It lifts 45,000 kg under the spreader in the first row and stacks up to five 8’6″ ISO containers high, also in the first row. This capacity class covers virtually every laden container in circulation, which is why the 45-tonne size remains the most requested in intermodal terminals and inland depots.

The machine has been regularly serviced and repaired throughout its working life, and is in excellent operating condition today.

Engine, transmission and systems

The engine is a Volvo direct-injection turbodiesel with intercooler — a widely used unit with a dense service network and parts available without waiting times. The transmission is a Clark 36415 with powershift, torque converter and inching system, which allows precise control of travel during pick-up and set-down: manual and automatic shifting, four forward and four reverse gears, an anti-reversal device protecting the unit, and a transmission oil cooler.

The hydraulic circuit features oil cooling designed to hold a constant temperature during operation. It matters more than it sounds: stable oil temperature means consistent circuit efficiency, longer component life and reduced or eliminated leaks. Steering is hydraulic, with a single large double-acting cylinder and a servo-assisted Danfoss valve.

Service brakes are oil-immersed discs on the drive wheels, hydraulically operated, with automatic adjustment and oil cooling; the system requires no routine maintenance. The parking brake is a dry disc, electro-hydraulic unit mounted on the transmission: it engages in the absence of oil pressure, is controlled by a button on the instrument panel, and applies automatically should the main braking system fail.

Cabin and spreader

Enclosed, heated cab with air-suspension seat, controls grouped on the operator’s right armrest, adjustable steering wheel and low noise levels. The instrument panel carries warning lights and gauges for every machine function. Lighting complies with road traffic regulations and includes work lights on the boom and spreader for night operation.

The spreader is telescopic from 20 ft to 40 ft for laden containers, with ± 800 mm side shift, rotation from -95° to +185° and both mechanical and electrical safety devices. The asymmetric rotation beyond 180° is what lets the operator place a container even when the machine is not square to the row — an everyday situation in tight yards.
